The Complete Catch Basin Handbook: Types, Advantages, and Setup

If you carry out stormwater management in urban areas, you should know about a catch basin and its advantages. A catch basin helps in managing surface water that appears on roads and pavements during rainfall. The rainwater gets collected in the catch basin and does not flood the streets.

At Super Iron Foundry, we manufacture high-value catch basins for our customers. We use the best designs and raw materials to produce catch basins that offer great performance.

In this blog, we discuss different types of catch basins and the advantages of using a catch basin. We also discuss a few tips to consider when installing a catch basin.

Types of Catch Basins

Below are some examples of different types of catch basins -

1. Catch Basin Type 1

The catch basin, which is Type 1, can only handle a low volume of surface water. You can use this around parking lots, garage spaces and in places where there is not a lot of traffic.

2. Catch Basin Type 2

Catch basins that belong to Type 2 can handle a moderate amount of water flow. You cannot use these in heavy traffic areas or places where water is likely to accumulate in large volumes when it rains.

3. Catch Basin Type 3

The catch basin that is type 3 is capable of excessive surface water management. It can handle large volumes of rainwater and can also withstand the impact produced by the movement of people and vehicles. It is the sturdiest type of catch basin drain that exists and can be used in busy and high-traffic areas.

Benefits of Using a Catch Basin

The following are some of the benefits of using a catch basin for stormwater management -

1. Prevents Roads from being Waterlogged

When you install a catch basin to manage surface water, you prevent streets from flooding. All the water that gets collected on the streets during the rains flows right into the drains underground through the catch basins.

The water is not allowed to stand still on the roads and create floods. Cars, buses, and people can move safely on the roads without facing problems posed by waterlogging.

2. Keeps Drains from Overflowing

Another benefit of using catch basins is that they prevent drains from overflowing. The design of the catch basins is such that only water is allowed to move through them into the drains below. All leaves, twigs, and other types of debris get stuck at the mouth of the basin.

The drain pipes do not get blocked as a result of the debris being stuck at the mouth of the catch basin. The drains do not therefore overflow and function smoothly.

3. Does Not Allow Drain Water to Become Polluted

Using catch basins is beneficial because you protect the environment, too, when you do so. Since debris or wastes are prevented from entering the drains because of how the catch basins are designed, the water in the drains does not get too toxic.

The water that makes its way from the drains to the streams and rivers is free from toxicity and good for the environment.

4. Good Longevity and Low Maintenance

The catch basins are useful because they can be used for a long period of time. They are made with durable and high-quality materials like concrete, as well as structural foam, and do not wear out.

You can use catch basins for surface water management for more than ten to fifteen years at a stretch without having to repair or maintain them often.

Tips for Installing a Catch Basin

You should consider the following tips when installing a catch basin -

1. Mark the Area for Installation

You should first mark the area where you are going to install or set up the catch basin. When you do so, you will make sure that the catch basin is properly aligned when you put it in place.

2. Ensure the Basin Hole is of the Right Depth

You should make sure that the basin hole that you excavate is of the right depth. The hole of the basin should be six inches wider than the basin itself on every side.

3. Prepare the Foundation for the Basin Perfectly

You must prepare a good foundation before you install a catch basin. You can prepare the foundation using crushed stone. You can also prepare this foundation using gravel.

4. Connect Drain Pipes

You need to connect all the drainage pipes using PVC primer. You have to make sure that all the pipes are fitted well together. You should use PVC drainage pipes that are approximately 4 inches long.

5. Start Backfilling

You should start backfilling the area around the catch basin once you have connected all the drain pipes firmly. You can use the excavated soil to do the backfilling.

At the same time, you should also remove any debris or rocks which could spoil the structure and quality of the basin walls.

6. Position the Basin Grate and Complete Grading

Once you have backfilled, you need to position the basin grate in the basin hole and complete grading around the basin. You should then test the basin once to check if the installation has been done correctly and thoroughly.

To conclude, there are various types of catch basins that exist, and many benefits of using a catch basin. The process of installing a catch basin is also quite easy and hassle-free.
